This is a large, antique mug or coffee can in copper luster decorated with a transfer print. The decoration features a transfer of a woman - highlighted with touches of hand painting - standing on shore next to an anchor while in the background a ship sails across open water. In Christianity the anchor is a symbol of hope and safety and was a common decorative theme in the 1800s. This mug has an applied handle, a raised border under the rim and matching illustrations on each side. Although not signed we believe this is a piece made by Sunderland, probably in the 1850s/1870s. Condition is excellent! Some wear to the luster applied to the top rim but no chips, cracks, repairs or damage. Measures: 3 1/2" tall, 3 5/8" across (approx.).
