One is sharpening the nib of a dip pen and the other gentleman is reading a letter. After some searching online I found that these tiles depict Charles Dickens, ‘Pickwick Papers’ characters. These porcelain tiles are made from a technique called ‘Émaux Ombrants’. There are no artist signatures, however on the back are the marks for the manufacturer, Sherwin & Cotton. …. Each tile measures 6” by 12” and come framed in the original, 8 "” by 14 ¾” fumed oak frames. In our photographs you can see that there is crazing to the glaze, but there are no problems or restorations to these Tiles.
