A ntique Carved Wood Japanese Noh Mask Man w. Mustache WWII Veteran Bring-Back I purchased this at an estate auction in Lancaster, PA about 10 or 12 years ago.The widow of a WWII veteran was downsizing, and was selling her husband's military relics from the Pacific theatre. This mask was among his effects. He brought home many souvenirs, including an opium pipe. I was able to buy this mask and the other carving, but nothing else.It has been hanging on the wall of my study since then, and it's time to let it go.I am unsure of the age, but this has a tiny paper label on the back, which may be of help in dating it (photo 12)Size is about 7-1/2" tall, 5-1/2" wide, and about 3-1/2" deep Carved from very light-weight wood Medallions on hair seem to be plaster Painted with extreme care with delicate detail, especially the hair strands encircling the face On overall surface of face in white part, you can see fine grain of the woodSmall areas where paint has rubbed off: on one eye (photo 4); beyond chin (photo 7); a few places on carved hair Small areas of loss to the plaster on the gold medallions in hair (photos 3 and 9) Tiny chip in carved hair (photo 3)Painting of white on face has aging and nose and chin are a little bit darker.
