This fine pewter plate has an impressed eagle mark with a full set of hallmarks. This mark is listed in "A Guide To American Pewter" by Carl Jacobs. This is mark number 4, listed on page 22-23; where an 8" plate was valued at $40 back in 1957. This mark was used by Nathaniel Austin after the American Revolution when he moved back into his shop in Charlestown, MA., after several years working out of Lunenburg, MA., during the Revolution to be safe from the British army. Since England wanted the colonies to buy their pewter from England, they would close down any shops were they found pewter being manufactured in the colonies.
