antique 19th century sandalwood hand-carved and inlaid box from India scene from the Ramayama intricate carving of Vishnu's 7th Avatar Rama slaying Ravana, with Hanuman, and perhaps a monkey servant also, two lions among the foliage as sentries the main sandalwood plaque is in perfect condition--very fine almost high-relief carving Moghul influence in the background pattern of foliage arabesques escutcheon of a carved leaf frames the lock's keyhole--lock seems to be functional, lacks the key safron-color velvet lines the inside the box is 9 inches across x 6 3/4 inches wide x 3 inches tall some wood and other banding and geometrical inlay missing--please examine photos all relief wood panels are in very nice condition the box still has a lovely, sweet aromatic sandalwood perfume the box was acquired in Central Florida at an estate sale 20 years ago
