Here is an extremely RARE and hard to find PAIR of French character dolls, YERRI & GRETEL, designed after the French, Alsace-born, illustrator, Jean Jacques Waltz's (writer, illustrator & dollmaker) designs, who was known as "Oncle Hansi" . Dressed in their traditional Alsatian costumes, they each have Prialytine , (heavy celluloid-like composition) five-piece jointed bodies with swivel socket heads, big side-glancing eyes, long eyelashes, quizzical brows, watermelon smiling mouths and painted, light brown or blonde hair. Produced by P.J. Gallais & Cie circa 1917. They both have painted blue striped stockings and black shoes and wear their original silk and wool clothing including her huge black silk bow with French patriotic, rosette insignia applique. She has some surface paint crazing and paint cracks (not actual cracks) on her legs as shown. Yerri has one hand shaped with an opening to hold a small French flag which is not present. Gretel holds her red cloth umbrella and may have had a long ago repair to her right hand. Amazingly, they still have their original cardboard wrist tag in the shape of a chalk board that reads: "Vive la France! Gretel !" on one side and HANSI with insignia on the reverse .
