Cut glass globe carafe in the St. James pattern by J.Hoare. Hoare was one of the top cutting hosues of the brilliant period. Their designs inspired many of the other companies. Hawkes , Sinclaire, Egginton and other all eminated from the Hoare co. St. James is a classic design imitated and altered by many of the other companies. The carafe is cut on a quality blank. It measures 8 inches tall and 6" diameter. It is in excellent condition. American Brilliant Period 1876-1916 No Reserve!!!!!!!! American Brilliant cut glass was made in the United States from roughly 1876-1916. It is an art form that we believe Americans did better than anyone in the world. The craftsmanship that went into these pieces is amazing. They were hand created from start to finish. The formulas were carefully developed to produce the purest and whitest of blanks. The lead content in modern crystal is 24%. American Brilliant is anywhere from 30-40% lead. This made the glass clear, heavy and facilitated cutting by lending a softness to the "metal". The pieces were hand blown then kiln cooled. Skilled cutters would cut each and every miter in the design with steel wheels with sand and water dripping on them, then stone wheels to smooth the large cuts, then various sizes of stone wheels to make the different size cuts, then wooden wheels with pumice on them
