This is a vintage original “DESTINATION - MOON” Mechanical Savings Bank by Duro Mold commemorating BOTH the first manned flight by NASA Mercury Astronaut Alan Shepard (5/5/61) as well as the first orbital flight (2/20/62) of Mercury Astronaut John Glenn. It is in excellent working condition! This is Model 1000 by DURO MOLD of Detroit, Michigan. The spring mechanism works but there is no key. It has a bright silver colored plating. This “Destination - Moon” Bank was a giveaway from the Central Brevard National Bank at Cocoa. This mechanical bank was right there in the thick of the Mercury launches!!! When you place a coin on the rocket side holder and press it downwards it will lock in position. Press the button on the base and the coin is launched into the Moon vault.There is a blue orbital ring around the Moon which says - “Commemorating Comdr. Alan B. Shepard’s First Flight From America Into Outer Space May 5, 1961 Time 15 Min. Ht. 115 Mi. Dist. 300 Miles Approx.” There is also a small red painted rocket on the ring as well. The decal on the base says - “ Commemorating Lt. Col. John H. Glenn Jr.’s Triumphant Triple Orbit of the Earth February 20, 1962.” The second decal says “Central Brevard National Bank At Cocoa Member F.D.I.C.” Inside the base there is additional writing, model, number, company name, etc. It measures app. 10 read more
