On offer here is a highlypolished specimen of Banded Onyx that has been carved in the form of adecorative egg shape. Whereas many examples of this material have only a limited color palette, this piece is especially rich with deep greens, browns and reds. Onyx is a type of Chalcedony, a member of the crystal class with a Moh’s hardness rating of 7. Its quartz system is hexagonal. Onyx is specified as a banded Chalcedony in which often the channels of banding are parallel. This type of onyx is often be used in the carving of cameos, once the layered colors tolerate the necessary contrast of background with foreground. Banded onyx is formed from dissolved carbonate minerals when limestone or dolomite sediments come into contact with hot water from recent volcanic action. This specimen is an excellent format for displaying the beauty of Banded Onyx – an egg measuring 2.6” in length and 1-7/8” in diameter at its widest point. It would make an excellent desk ornament or a splendid addition to an existing mineral display. The piece weighs 8.7 ounces (247 grams) and a carved wooden stand is included with this item.
