OFFICIAL WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION DEDICATION MEDAL IN ALUMINUM DESIGNED BY OLIN LEVI WARNER (SAME DESIGNER OF THE COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR) OCT 21, 1892 CHICAGORare, official Dedication medal for the World's Columbian Exposition Oct. 21, 1892. Designed by famed sculptor of the time, Olin Levi Warner. His initials O-L-W are prominently displayed on the obverse. The obverse consists of the Lotto bust of Columbus used on the Columbian Half Dollar and the $5 Postage stamp. The reverse consists of Columbus' ships and the wording "TO COMMEMORATE THE DEDICATION OF THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION AT CHICAGO ON THE FOUR HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA BY CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS OCTOBER 21, 1892". This medal was struck by Tiffany and Company of New York. It is normally made of bronze. 368 bronze examples were struck and distributed to dignitaries at the Dedication ceremonies. This is an extremely scarce version in aluminum. Not sure if it was a trial specimen for approval. In my 30 plus years of collecting, I have only found 3 examples in aluminum. One is owned by the American Numismatic Society in New York and the other two were purchased in auction over the last 20 years. It is identified as Eglit E-406.
