A London-based "consulting detective" whose abilities border on the fantastic, Holmes is known for his astute logical reasoning , his ability to adopt almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science to solve difficult cases.The character first appeared in print in 1887, and was featured in four novels and 56 short stories by Conan Doyle, as well as later works by other authors. The first novel, A Study in Scarlet , appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four , in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character's popularity grew with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine , beginning with " A Scandal in Bohemia " in 1891; additional short-story series and two novels (published in serial form) appeared from then to 1927. The events in the stories take place from about 1880 to 1914.All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson . Two are narrated by Holmes himself (" The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier " and " The Adventure of the Lion's Mane "), and two others are written in the third person (" The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone " and " His Last Bow "). In two stories (" The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual " and " The Adventure of the Gloria Scott "), Holmes tells Watson the story from memory, with Watson narrating the frame story. The first and fourth novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear , include long passages of omniscient narrative of events unknown to either Holmes or Watson.Details about Sherlock Holmes's life, except for the adventures in the books, are scarce in Conan Doyle's original stories. Nevertheless, mentions of his early life and extended family paint a loose biographical picture of the detective.An estimate of Holmes's age in " His Last Bow " places his year of birth at 1854; the story, set in August 1914, describes him as 60 years of age. Leslie S. Klinger , author of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes , posits the detective's birthdate as 6 January.Holmes says that he first developed his methods of deduction as an undergraduate; his earliest cases, which he pursued as an amateur, came from fellow university students. A meeting with a classmate's father led him to adopt detection as a profession and he spent six years after university as a consultant before financial difficulties led him to accept John H. Watson as a fellow lodger (when the narrative of the stories begins).Beginning in 1881 Holmes has lodgings at 221 B Baker Street , London. According to an early story 221B is an apartment at the upper end of the street, up 17 steps. Until Watson's arrival Holmes worked alone, only occasionally employing agents from the city's underclass; these agents included a host of informants , and a group of street children he called "the Baker Street Irregulars ". The Irregulars appear in three stories: A Study in Scarlet , The Sign of the Four and " The Adventure of the Crooked Man ".His parents are not mentioned in the stories, although Holmes mentions that his ancestors were "country squires ". In " The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter ", he claims that his great-uncle was French artist Horace Vernet . Holmes's brother Mycroft , seven years his senior, is a government official who appears in "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter", " The Final Problem " and " The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans " and is mentioned in " The Adventure of the Empty House ". Mycroft has a unique civil service position as a kind of human database for all aspects of government policy. He lacks Sherlock's interest in physical investigation, however, preferring to spend his time at the Diogenes Club .Holmes works as a detective for 23 years, with physician John Watson assisting him for 17 years. They were roommates before Watson's 1887 marriage and again after his wife 's death. Their residence is maintained by their landlady, Mrs. Hudson . Most of the stories are frame narratives , written from Watson's point of view as summaries of the detective's most interesting cases. Holmes frequently calls Watson's writing sensational and populist, suggesting that it fails to accurately and objectively report the "science" of his craft:Detection is, or ought to be, an exact science and should be treated in the same cold and unemotional manner. You have attempted to tinge it ["A Study in Scarlet"] with romanticism, which produces much the same effect as if you worked a love-story .... Some facts should be suppressed, or, at least, a just sense of proportion should be observed in treating them. The only point in the case which deserved mention was the curious analytical reasoning from effects to causes, by which I succeeded in unravelling it.--Sherlock Holmes on John Watson's "pamphlet", The Sign of the FourNevertheless, Holmes's friendship with Watson is his most significant relationship. When Watson is injured by a bullet, although the wound turns out to be "quite superficial", Watson is moved by Holmes's reaction:It was worth a wound; it was worth many wounds; to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation.Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 May 1859 - 7 July 1930) was a British writer and physician, most noted for his fictional stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes , which are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction .He is also known for writing the fictional adventures of a second character he invented, Professor Challenger , and for popularising the mystery of the Mary Celeste . He was a prolific writer whose other works include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at 11 Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle , was English, of Irish Catholic descent, and his mother, Mary (née Foley), was Irish Catholic. His parents married in 1855. In 1864 the family dispersed due to Charles's growing alcoholism and the children were temporarily housed across Edinburgh. In 1867, the family came together again and lived in squalid tenement flats at 3 Sciennes Place .Supported by wealthy uncles, Doyle was sent to the Jesuit preparatory school Hodder Place , Stonyhurst , at the age of nine (1868-70). He then went on to Stonyhurst College until 1875. From 1875 to 1876, he was educated at the Jesuit school Stella Matutina in Feldkirch , Austria. By the time he left, he had rejected religion and become an agnostic , though he would eventually become a spiritualist mystic .Doyle's father died in 1893, in the Crichton Royal , Dumfries , after many years of psychiatric illness.Doyle struggled to find a publisher for his work. His first work featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, A Study in Scarlet , was taken by Ward Lock & Co on 20 November 1886, giving Doyle £25 for all rights to the story. The piece appeared later that year in the Beeton's Christmas Annual and received good reviews in The Scotsman and the Glasgow Herald . Holmes was partially modelled on his former university teacher Joseph Bell . Doyle wrote to him, "It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes ... round the centre of deduction and inference and observation which I have heard you inculcate I have tried to build up a man." Dr. (John) Watson owes his surname, but not any other obvious characteristic, to a Portsmouth medical colleague of Doyle's, Dr James WatsonRobert Louis Stevenson was able, even in faraway Samoa , to recognise the strong similarity between Joseph Bell and Sherlock Holmes: "My compliments on your very ingenious and very interesting adventures of Sherlock Holmes. ... can this be my old friend Joe Bell?" Other authors sometimes suggest additional influences--for instance, the famous Edgar Allan Poe character C. Auguste Dupin .A sequel to A Study in Scarlet was commissioned and The Sign of the Four appeared in Lippincott's Magazine in February 1890, under agreement with the Ward Lock company. Doyle felt grievously exploited by Ward Lock as an author new to the publishing world and he left them. Short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes were published in the Strand Magazine . Doyle wrote the first five Holmes short stories from his office at 2 Upper Wimpole Street (then known as Devonshire Place), which is now marked by a memorial plaque.Doyle's attitude towards his most famous creation was ambivalent. In November 1891 he wrote to his mother: "I think of slaying Holmes,... and winding him up for good and all. He takes my mind from better things." His mother responded, "You won't! You can't! You mustn't!". In an attempt to deflect publishers' demands for more Holmes stories, he raised his price to a level intended to discourage them, but found they were willing to pay even the large sums he asked. As a result, he became one of the best-paid authors of his time.In December 1893, to dedicate more of his time to his historical novels, Doyle had Holmes and Professor Moriarty plunge to their deaths together down the Reichenbach Falls in the story " The Final Problem ". Public outcry, however, led him to feature Holmes in 1901 in the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles .In 1903, Doyle published his first Holmes short story in ten years, The Adventure of the Empty House , in which it was explained that only Moriarty had fallen; but since Holmes had other dangerous enemies--especially Colonel Sebastian Moran --he had arranged to also be perceived as dead. Holmes was ultimately featured in a total of 56 short stories --the last published in 1927--and four novels by Doyle, and has since appeared in many novels and stories by other authors .Jane Stanford compares some of Moriarty's characteristics to those of the Fenian John O'Connor Power . 'The Final Problem' was published the year the Second Home Rule Bill passed through the House of Commons. 'The Valley of Fear' was serialised in 1914, the year Home Rule, the Government of Ireland Act (18 September) was placed on the Statute BookDoyle's first novels were The Mystery of Cloomber , not published until 1888, and the unfinished Narrative of John Smith , published only in 2011. Habakuk Jephson's Statement ", both inspired by Doyle's time at sea, the latter of which popularised the mystery of the Mary Celeste and added fictional details such as the perfect condition of the ship (which had actually taken on water by the time it was discovered) and its boats remaining on board (the one boat was in fact missing) that have come to dominate popular accounts of the incident.Between 1888 and 1906, Doyle wrote seven historical novels, which he and many critics regarded as his best work.
