19th Century Staffordshire Spill Vase of a Couple by a Tree Trunk Up until the end of the 19th Century spill vases were commonly used in every home. Usually found on the mantle piece they were filled with rolled up tapers or wood sticks called spill. They were used to transfer fire from the fireplace to candles and lamps around the home. This lovely example is of a couple resting beside a tree trunk. Finely painted with good facial detail and use of gilt as a decorative touch on the clothing. In overall good condition with a little loss of paint in places and age related crazing to the glaze. Please look at the photos as these form part of the description.
