Provenance = March 14, 2019 Morphy's Auction Lot #2066Morphy's said it best in their auction description........"ONE OF THE FINER EXAMPLES KNOWN"Considered one of the very best Linemar (Japan) toys ever produced, this is SMOKING POPEYE with it's Original Box accompanied by all of its original inserts and its Morphy's auction tag.100% original and complete circa 1950's. Both toy and original box are in NM+ C9.5 condition. Works very strong and as it should. On/off lever works. When activated Popeye waves with his right arm and hand then turns his head right and left while simulating smoking his illuminated pipe which he raises to his mouth with his left arm. The bowl of his pipe lights a bright red (pic #11) and smoke is emitted from his mouth (pic #12). Popeye measures 9 inches high. Pristine battery compartment. Bright, colorful, shiny tin litho. Scarce toy with a scarce box and inserts. Box is near perfect with no writing, tears, separations or restoration. All original staples are present and the box is square as a brick. Original inserts (2) are in pristine condition. It would be nearly impossible to upgrade this toy / box combination.Note: The battery "lid" located on the bottom of the spinach can twists off to reveal the battery compartment.
