1935 UNIVERSITY NORTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES UND SGND ABSTRACT BIRD 9 1/2" PLATE/ LOW FOOTED COMPOTE For sale is a unique and 1 of a kind piece of UND pottery made at the North Dakota School of Mines in Grand Forks, ND. It is a 9 1/2" round, hand thrown plate/ or low footed compote with an abstract bird design. The outer design reminds us of a native American motif. The background color is a warm tan. It has the cobalt blue School of Mines stamp on the back and it is signed "Viola Thomas 1935". There are no chips, cracks or repairs . There is some light crazing and there are some glaze pops in the cobalt glaze . Check the photos. Their are some larger ones found on the wings and 4 smaller ones on the tail feathers. Check page 173 in Ken Forster's Book, you will see a similar compote marked M. Cable. This piece is quite heavy and weighs 2 3/4 pounds. It Displays well with strong color and design.
