1929 Fulper Stangl Pottery HAND-THROWN 3-Handle Jar VASE~ KUNSMAN Smoke BlueDEACQUISITION FROM HILL~FULPER~STANGL POTTERIES MUSEUMDescription:From our archival collection and once displayed in our Hill-Fulper-Stangl Museum Kiln display ~ #1237 Ribbed 3-Handle Jar in richly-variegated Smoke Blue glaze!This is a beautifully proportioned and graceful example of John Kunsman's Hand-Made Primitive Artware line. The #1237 Ribbed and 1238 Smooth 3-handle jar shapes were offered in several sizes. These shapes and were introduced in 1929 and produced through 1935. The 1927 Fulper catalog described this hand-thrown line of artware as 'Free Hand Turned Pottery'. The hard-to-find Smoke Blue glaze is rich and 'smoky', with lots of golden-hued crystals and flames of vibrant blue.Stangl's Hand-Made Artware shapes were designed and completely hand-thrown by Fulper's master potter John Kunsman. They show all the wonderful hallmarks of hand-craftsmanship, including nice, even ribbing up the sides of and a perfect spiral in the bottom. Beginning as a potter, hand-throwing stoneware crocks and jugs, his ceramics aptitude and knowledge were quickly recognized and Kunsman was ultimately involved in factory improvements and developing several Fulper artware lines. Kunsman’s first improvement to Fulper production was the redesign of the downdraft kilns in 1890. Kunsman was well versed in stoneware production, as he had spent his early years working at his father’s pottery in Johnsonville, Pennsylvania.John Kunsman was also instrumental in developing Fulper’s Vasekraft artware line. As early as 1899, William Fulper was experimenting with artware shapes and glazes to improve upon the old Lehigh Valley/Smith Pottery art line. John Kunsman designed the hand-thrown shapes that were then glazed with Fulper’s experimental glazes. These early art pieces were then displayed in one of the pottery’s front windows and sold to passersby. This artware was ultimately developed into the Vasekraft line of artware introduced in 1909.John Kunsman’s personable and easygoing personality made him an ideal candidate for publicly representing Fulper Pottery Company. In 1924 John Kunsman began demonstrating how pottery is made at prominent department stores and pottery exhibits across the country.Kunsman traveled with a potter’s wheel, a small portable electric kiln and enough clay and glazes needed to demonstrate the potter’s art while promoting Fulper products. Demonstration items were produced in Fulper Pottery clay and glazes as well as Fulper Fayence clay and glazes. As he demonstrated, Kunsman explained to onlookers the ancient art of the potter, as well as modern ceramics production.1925 - John Kunsman at Bamberger's, Newark, NJThe demonstrations were conducted as near to Flemington as New Brunswick, New Jersey, or as far as Atlanta, Georgia or St. Louis, Missouri, but always at a retailer that carried Fulper Pottery Company products.
