Published in Moscow in Russian in 1915.Ivan Bunin signed with his Russian signature on the pre-title page.58 immaculate pages. Toning and foxing to the front and rear endpapers. Please see our photos and the photos of the complete table of contents. No other signatures, No marks. The lovely bookplate of Clare Boothe Luce (see below for Luce details) is affixed on the left front endpaper and is toned as are the endpapers, front and back. Clare Boothe Luce commissioned this bookplate, which is a copy of William Blake's "Christian Reading In His Book", Christian being the main character in John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress. The question and answer inscription on the scroll at the bottom of the bookplate: "How camest thou by thy burden at first? By reading this book in my hand."Bound in buff colored coated paper over boards, with brown titling on the front cover. Lacks the dust jacket. The book has moderate wear, toned around the edges of the covers, bumps to the corners, bumps to the top & bottom of the spine, some light chipping and soiling to the spine. 7-7/8" tall x 5-1/2" tall x ½" thick or 20, 14, 1.3cm. Leonid Andreyev (1871 -1919) was a Russian playwright, novelist and short-story writer, who is considered to be a father of Expressionism in Russian literature. He is one of the most talented and prolific representatives of the Silver Age period. Andreyev's style combines elements of realist, naturalist, and symbolist schools in literature.Ivan Bunin's The Gentleman from San Francisco is a short story/ novella by a Nobel Prize-winning Russian author Ivan Bunin, written in 1915 and published the same year in Moscow. Translated into English by D.H.Lawrence (with Samuil Koteliansky), the story is one of Bunin's best known and regarded as a classic.Ivan Bunin (1870 -1953) was the first Russian writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Nobel Prize in Literature 1933 was awarded to Ivan Bunin "for the strict artistry with which he has carried on the classical Russian traditions in prose writing". He was noted for the strict artistry with which he carried on the classical Russian traditions in the writing of prose and poetry. The texture of his poems and stories, sometimes referred to as "Bunin brocade", is considered to be one of the richest in the language. Bunin was a revered figure among anti-communist White emigres, European critics, and many of his fellow writers, who viewed him as a true heir to the tradition of realism in Russian literature established by Tolstoy and Chekhov.Leonid Andreyev's short story /novella Lazarus begins with a celebration of life, which is also a denial of death. Later in the story this denial is crushed and death emerges victorious over everything. Lazarus is met by his relatives and friends as if he was a man returning from a war, and like a war veteran who had been exhausted by the war and needed psychological revival which could only be tenderly bestowed by those who loved him. This is a fascinating story from an important author whose life was cut short by the pressures of the Russian revolution and severe depression.Clare Boothe LuceThis book comes from the New York City estate library of Clare Boothe Luce, Henry Luce, and Henry "Hank" Luce III and is one of our last from this huge purchase. Clare Boothe Luce was active in the American Red Cross for her long life, starting in youth as a volunteer with her mother and later as a US Congresswoman and US Ambassador and in her capacity as a key member of the family running Time Magazine, Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated.
