A true one of a kind piece of Autograph history in the form of a 1908 paper card from the Middlesex School in Concord, MA signed by 6 famous and very distinguished and important Americans and Harvard graduates: Charles Jackson Paine, Norwood Penrose Hallowell, Robert Winsor, William Cameron Forbes, LeBaron Russell Briggs and one that I can not decipher . Just a few bullet points on these famous men's bios include: Civil War generals, baseball captains, yachting enthusiasts, golfers, bankers, captains of industry, Educators and even the governor of the Philippines and that doesn't even scratch the surface! A very important collection of signatures indeed!This card is matted to a scrapbook page that has been removed from a 1908-1912 Harvard University scrapbook belonging to 1912 Harvard graduate John Hoar who was on the football and crew teams. The reverse side of the page containing the Autographs is a pamphlet from a 1907 concert given by the Middlesex School Glee and Mandolin clubs.The Middlesex School is a prestigious boarding school in Massachusetts that continues to breed many students to become Ivy League graduates and was where Hoar attended before going to Harvard. The card has a header which reads Middlesex School Concord, Mass and is a true piece of history containing the 6 signatures of the Trustees of the school in 190 8; all who happen to be famous and influential Americans! Above the signatures is a hand written inscription in Hoar's hand which reads Trustees of the School in 1908 .In Excellent condition with only light wear; card is mounted to a scrapbook page but the matting acts as a perfect background making this piece ready to frame!All signatures are clean, bright and legible and all penned in period ink. The 6 Autographs are all guaranteed genuine, will pass a PSA test and are all penned in separate hands and match examples of signatures referenced online. They are of: Charles Jackson Paine, Norwood Penrose Hallowell, Robert Winsor, William Cameron Forbes, LeBaron Russell Briggs and one that I can not decipher but am assuming is of equal notoriety as the other 5 gentlemen. These men were the first six financiers and trustees who helped found the Middlesex School in MA and their bios suggest that they were some of the leading men who helped make America what it is today!. Below are detailed bios (from Wikipedia) of the 5 men whose signatures I was able to verify:Charles Jackson Paine (August 26, 1833 - August 12, 1916) was an American railroad executive, soldier , and yachtsman who was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War . Paine was born August 26, 1833, in Boston , Massachusetts , son of Charles Cushing Paine and Fannie Cabot Jackson, and great-grandson of Robert Treat Paine , one of the signers of the United States Declaration of Independence . His brother, Sumner Edward Jackson Paine, was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company A, 20th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and was killed during the repulse of Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg .He graduated from Harvard in 1853 and made a considerable fortune in railroad enterprises. In 1861 he entered the Federal service as a captain in the 22nd Massachusetts Infantry . The next year he was sent to Ship Island, Mississippi . In October, he was commissioned as the first colonel of the 2nd Louisiana Infantry . During the siege of Port Hudson (May 24-July 8, 1863) he commanded a brigade . On March 4, 1864, Paine resigned his commission and returned to Massachusetts.The following July, he again entered the service as a brigadier general . On September 29, Paine led a division of black troops at New Market Heights, located south of Richmond, Virginia . Paine participated in both expeditions against Fort Fisher (December 1864/January 1865), although his troops played only a minor role.
