This auction is for a 1798 folded letter stampless cover with a Boston postmark, as pictured. The cover measures about 3 1/2 by 6 inches. The letter is dated May 24, 1798. It was sent from Liverpool, England, to Wiscasset, Maine, which was part of Massachusetts at the time. The upper left corner bears a Boston, July 19 (if I'm reading it correctly), cancellation. The lower left corner directs that the letter be sent via Boston on a ship whose name I cannot read. There are several later pencil markings on the reverse, but no markings contemporary with the letter. The letter discusses lumber prices. There are no tears, but there are two filing folds.
