Up for auction is a 1787 Massachusetts copper coin. Just after the US got independence, under the Articles of Confederation, each state was allowed to mint its own coins, but only until the US Constitution was written and each the states joined to form the United States. So coins were only made by Massachusetts up to 1788. Several dies were cast for the coins, so there are different variations of these coins.On one side of this coin is a Native American Indian holding a bow in what would be his right hand and an arrow in his left (facing the coin the boy is to the left, arrow to the right). On this side along the edge of the coin is the word Commonwealth, with a star. There is some wear around the edge.On the reverse side is an eagle with the word 'cent' stamped on his chest. Massachusetts is written around the edge, and under the eagle is stamped 1787, and this is very worn. There is also wear around the edge of the coin on this side. This is also where I see the coin as most unique from other 1787 Massachusetts coins...where the different dies come into play. The olive branch the eagle is holding in his right claw (left side of coin) has only 4 leaves. Most other coins...including the replicas that are out there have 5 leaves on the olive branch.
