Les Lettres de Cachet et des Prisons d'Etat. MIRABEAU, Honore-Gabriel de Riqueti, Comte de. Les Lettres de Cachet et des Prisons d'Etat. Ouvrage posthume, compose en 1778 . "A Hambourg" [but probably Neuchatel], 1782. (1) ff, 5-203 pp. Apparently lacking half-title. Disbound, a little dusty and slightly dog-eared. Rare, one of several editions published in the same year. 'Second & Dernier Volume' only of this attack on the French government by the statesman and soon-to-be revolutionary leader Mirabeau, published in two volumes. From 1777 until 1782 Mirabeau was imprisoned by a 'lettre de cachet' in the castle of Vincennes. During his confinement, while he considered himself dead to the world, he composed his famous work 'Des Lettres de Cachet', published after his liberation. "The book exhibits an accurate knowledge of French constitutional history skillfully applied in an attempt to show that an existing actual grievance was not only philosophically unjust but constitutionally illegal. It shows... that application of wide historical knowledge, keen philsophical perception, and genuine eloquence to a practical purpose which was the great characteristic of Mirabeau, both as a political thinker and as statesman" - H.
