Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent was born on August 1, 1936, in Oran, Algeria. At the age of 17, he moved to Paris and enrolled at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. He was soon hired by Christian Dior as an assistant. When Dior died in 1957, Yves Saint Laurent was made the head designer. He opened his own couture house in 1962. Yves Saint Laurent died in 2008.
