Thomas Burberry was born on August 27, 1835, in Brockham, a small village in the district of Surrey, England. He opened his own small clothing outfitters in Basingstoke, United Kingdom, in 1856. He is best known for inventing a fabric called Gabardine. Thomas Burberry died on April 4, 1926. In 1891, the company opened a shop in London, and the expansion began. It was an independent company until 1955 when Great Universal Stores assumed ownership. In 1999, Burberrys became Burberry. Today, there are more than 500 stores worldwide.
