Claire McCardell was born in 1905 in Frederick, Maryland. At age 16, she moved to New York City to study fashion design. In 1927, she went to Paris to continue her studies at the Place des Vosges. She started her career with Robert Turk at Townley Frocks. Claire McCardell is credited with the creation of American sportswear.
