Perry Edwin Ellis was born in 1940 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He started his career as a buyer and merchandiser at the department store Miller & Rhoads. He moved to New York and designed his first collection for The Vera Companies. He founded his own fashion house, Perry Ellis International, in 1978. Perry Ellis died in 1986.
