Paul J. Bonwit was born in Germany in 1862. He moved to the United States in 1883 and by 1897, he became partners with Edmund D. Teller. Bonwitt Teller was a luxury department store in New York City and later a chain of department stores. After 1979, the ownership was changed frequently, and by 1990 the company declared bankruptcy. This particular Bonwit Teller clothing label is from a 1930s slip.
