The modern US Army has its roots in the Continental Army, which was formed on 14 June 1775. Airborne forces are military units set up to be moved by aircraft and dropped into battle, typically by parachute. A shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI), is an embroidered patch worn on some uniforms of the United States Army. The SSI in this image was approved for the 18th Army Corps in 1944. It was redesignated for the 18th Airborne Corps in 1958.
